E-seed presented at the London Design Biennale

Dozens of helix-shaped artificial self-drilling seeds, known as E-seeds, are planted in a field of white pebbles located within a darkened exhibition space. The E-seeds are dramatically lit with overhead spotlights.

Prof. Lining Yao and research associate Tucker Rae-Grant traveled to London, UK to install a live demonstration of Morphing Matter Lab’s E-Seed project at the 2023 edition of the London Design Biennale (June 1 - June 25). Morphing Matter Lab participated as a member of Automorph Network, an international group of researchers and designers who study self-shaping materials. Visitors to the exhibition can see the artificial self-drilling seeds actuate every 15 minutes when they are triggered by automated steam generators buried underneath a field of volcanic stone.

Moisture-responsive E-seeds are shown uncoiling.

Multiple people are installing different components of Automorph Network's presentation at the London Design Biennale.
